Professional Statement

Being a psychotherapist for over 30 years I enjoy working with families, couple, and individuals. My specialty is working with couples, working with families on pediatric and adolescent's issues, and hypnotherapy to help patients suffering from anxiety.
The majority of my practice is with couples. Some couples come in complaining that they feel more like roommates than a couple, others come in wanting to divorce and some have already decided to divorce and want to learn techniques to make it as smooth as possible for them and their children. Instead of looking at the specific problems that people bring in, I usually focus on helping people to identify and change the consistent patterns of interacting that are causing friction, and on identifying the misunderstandings and disagreements between the couple, many of which they are unaware of. I also try and help people to realize what is working and enhance the things that are positive in their relationship. My experience is that when people are having troubles their attention often focuses on difficulties and strengths don't get utilized enough.
In the past, I had done individual therapy with children. I stopped 20 years ago. My experience is that regardless of the issue, working with the whole family togetheris a more effective and faster way to deal with children's issues. Young children and teenagers are both quite reactive to family dysfunction. Positive changes in the family can cause successful outcomes that are more powerful than what an individual therapist can accomplish. I am also able to work with families that have issues affecting adults, issues between adult siblings or adult children and a parent.
Hypnosis has a reputation that is mostly based on movies and stage hypnotists . For hypnotherapists, hypnosis allows people to move beyond the limitations in their conscious mind about what is achievable for them, and to participate in an unconscious search for new solutions. People tend to find it a comfortable process. I use hypnosis, usually combined with other types of therapeutic tools, to work with people on depression and specifically on anxiety issues (general anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, procrastination).
In addition to practicing therapy, I provide clinical supervision, consultation, and training, both on working with families and on hypnotherapy.
I am an adjunct faculty in the Marriage and Family Therapy department at Hofstra University.
I teach hypnosis as part of the faculty of the NY Society for Ericksonian Psychotherapy and hypnosis (NYSEPH)
I train agency staff to work with families as a part of the faculty of the Minuchin Center for the Family.
